The vulva is both sacred and dynamic. There is little doubt that the major milestones of life are reflected in the yoni. The vulva changes with the major milestones of a female-bodied person—puberty, pregnancy, post-pregnancy, menopause, and senescence.
The yoni may take on different appearances between the major milestones of life. There are acute changes of happiness, health, and sexual excitement that are most certainly recognizable. During the 16th century, these changes were recognized and catalogued in sex positive, mystical sex manuals from India and the Middle East.
The “Anana Ranga” (15th or 16th century CE), broadly describes four different yonis and their corresponding personality types; while the 16th century Arabic manual called, “The Perfumed Garden” describes over thirty different types of vulvas and what they mean. The wisdom from these books has been updated with 21st century nomenclature.
